My Story
I am very excited and honored to be participating in the Students of the Year program this year. The Student of the Year program is a seven week long competition between candidates to see who can raise the most money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I will be raising money that will go right back to finding better ways to treat cancer patients, and getting this world one step closer to ending the fight against cancer for good! Our mission is to not only raise the most money, but to also bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.
I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) ten years ago in 2009 when I was only 6 years old. My parents, grandparents, 4 year old brother, and friends and family got me through this treatment, which would be one of the hardest battles I would fight in my life. Contrary to what you might think, I loved the American Family Children's Hospital, and still do. I walked the halls with my IV, played Farmville and Yamslam, played pranks on my doctors and nurses, and did many of the fun activities the hostpital provided. My treatment was good at first, but got harder over time. I had an allergic reaction to one of my chemotherapies, which caused blood to clot in my brain, and got sicker. The second year of my treatment was the hardest. My mom brought home a kitten to help us get through. That cat is now 8 years old, and still sleeps with me sometimes. When I was given a wish of course I wanted to go to Disney, so my family and I flew out to Florida, and I got to spend days at Universal Studios, the Disney Kingdoms, Epcot, and I spent my 8th birthday at SeaWorld. I was given my last treatment on October 20, 2011, and am going to be 10 years in remission this year. I am a sophomore in high school, a Key Club officer, in my school's marching band playing the trumpet, and am in Spanish Honors Society. My little brother is now taller than me and I enjoy going to the games and meets of all three sports he plays: basketball, track, and cross country. I beat cancer almost 8 years ago, and I plan to help cancer patients in the future by becoming an oncologist. My best friend and I plan on going into the medical field and one day finding the cure to cancer.
Please consider making a donation towards my campaign to help beat this horrible disease! All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research, but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.
Please visit my website, https://events.lls.org/wi/madisonsoy19/mfimreite, often and bring and tell all your friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!
