Whales Lacrosse has two girls teams playing July 22-24 in honor of Liz Lofurno. They will compete at the Oregon Lacrosse Classic in Bend, Or. Liz will be part of the high school team and there will also be a middle school team playing for her. Liz is a sophomore at West Linn High School in Oregon and has battled stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma for the past year. We are thrilled to report that Liz completed her chemo and her last scan showed no signs of CANCER!! She will be in Bend with us and, hopefully, will be on the field playing!
We are raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society via per-goal and flat rate pledges. Per goal pledge donations are exciting because they can keep track of how much they raise each time they score. We estimate the two teams will score a combined total of 55-100 goals throughout the tournament. We will cap all per-goal pledges at 100 goals so nothing over 100 goals will be charged. Whales Lacrosse started when a 15 year old named Jimmy Ryan wanted to put a competitive boys team together to play in a tournament. His team was different because they were not playing for recruiters, coaches or parents...they were playing because they loved the sport and simply wanted to be on the field. Lori Beck, a stage 4 breast cancer survivor and one of the player’s moms, was so touched by the idea that she started crying tears of joy. Jimmy decided right then that they would play in honor of Mrs. Beck. Jimmy challenged his teammates to secure “per-goal” pledges for charity and, in that first tournament, was able to raise over $10,000. Since that time, there have been three Whales teams and over $30,000 raised for various charities for cancer research and awareness. Each tournament Whales selects a different person to honor and raise money for the charity related to that person's fight. For this tournament Whales has chosen The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS's continued advancements over the years are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. LLS funded drugs are now being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.
