2015 Student of the Year Campaign!

Special Thanks to our 2015 Mission Sponsor: The Edgar A. Thronson Foundation

We are pleased to announce that 12 high school students in Delaware have accepted their nomination for the 2015 Student of the Year campaign!

Meet the Candidates

Student of the Year candidates are high school students enrolled in Delaware public or private schools who are interested in and enthusiastic about volunteerism, philanthropy, community outreach, and leadership. The Student of the Year campaign not only offers visibility in the community and local media but also demonstrates candidates’ excellence in leadership and community engagement for college applications and professional resumes.

The Student of the Year campaign is a six-week initiative in which nominated high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Delaware Chapter. Student of the Year nominees must submit an application (consisting of a questionnaire and essay), then a task force of college students and LLS volunteers select the candidates. The students raise money in honor of a local patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer. Candidates are strongly encouraged to form teams of three or more members to help with planning, fundraising, and logistics of the campaign.

The candidate who raises the most money at the end of the six-week competition earns the title Student of the Year as well as a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of his/her choice. An additional three students will be selected to receive a Citizenship Award based on their campaign’s commitment to Community, Leadership and the LLS Mission. Every candidate who reaches the minimum fundraising amount of $5,000 will also receive recognition for their achievement.

Students choose to compete to join the fight against cancer and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Leukemia is the number one cancer killer of children under the age of 20; therefore young people are helping other youth battling these devastating cancers.

Students rally their communities, schools and families to support their fundraising efforts. Along with their own websites, students will work with LLS staff to set a fundraising goal and to develop an action plan to reach that goal. LLS staff provides fundraising materials and support throughout the campaign. Suggested fundraising methods include: letter writing/email campaign and social networking; however, each candidate and their team will brainstorm with staff to determine a plan for success that could include sponsorship, table sales, program ad sales and events.
