Student Visionaries of the Year Washington DC

Avery Mascott | Team Close Conquers Cancer

Avery's Student Visionaries of the Year Washington DC Fundraiser

Feb 07, 2024
Hi! My name is Avery Mascott and I am dedicating my time with LLS this winter to the memory of my dad, Jeff Mascott (https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jeffmascott2).  In fall 2022 my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Pancreatic cancer has very few symptoms and by the time of diagnosis, my dad's cancer had spread to four spots in his liver and his lymph nodes.  Despite his chemotherapy and treatment at the cutting-edge facilities of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Center in Sibley Hospital, my dad passed away within six months.  My dad and I were very close -- he coached my first soccer team, paced me on my first 5k, prioritized family dinners, national park hiking trips, and family time at the beach, drove countless carpool legs, and led the town swim team on which I and my three brothers have participated for 10 summers.  He was the first person I turned to when I had a challenging day at school or a disappointing sports competition.  His death caused me to feel as though I lost a part of myself even though our community, church, and neighbors have surrounded me and my family with significant support.

To honor his legacy and help other families avoid similar loss, I want to raise awareness about the need for more cancer research.  My dad's diagnosis was terminal in large part because of the limited information that still exists about pancreatic cancer and the very limited treatment options available to patients.

You can support my fundraising efforts by donating via my personal fundraising page: https://events.lls.org/nca/svoydc24/AMascott or by sharing my campaign and fundraising link with your contacts. Donations are fully tax-deductible. Thank you!

I am a visionary; I have a vision for a world without cancer, but I need your help.

This year, I’m proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign, working to raise as much as possible for LLS’s mission.

As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS:

  • Funds cutting-edge research leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine that are improving and saving the lives of patients
  • Provides free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, including personalized, one-on-one support, assistance with identifying and enrolling in clinical trials, and more.
  • Mobilizes thousands of advocates to drive policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.

Please consider joining this fight by making a donation. All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!

Thanks to your support, my efforts will help ensure this generation is the last to see cancer.

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you!
