Team Highlanders for Change's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Over 185,000 people in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with Leukemia and Lymphoma this year. These diseases don’t discriminate. They impact both young and old and people of all income levels and walks of life. More than 57,000 brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, friends, and others will die from blood cancer illnesses this year.
I have personally seen my sister fight Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It’s difficult to explain to a ten-year-old what illness they have, why they can’t be around their friends during treatment, and why their hair falls out. The routine of chemotherapy, scans, and hospital stays is exhausting for both the patient and her family.
My sister during her Hodgkin’s Lymphoma treatment
Also, if you think ten is young, you’ve never been in a pediatric oncology ward. Watching children who can barely walk play with a scooter while they get their chemo treatment is something I thought I would never see.
All of these are reasons why I created a team of students at McLean High School to be part of this year’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year campaign. I want to raise funds to stop blood cancers and enable more people to get the type of advanced, life-saving treatment my sister was lucky enough to receive. I am asking for your help to make my SOY campaign a success!
Today, 1.2 million Americans are fighting or are in remission from blood cancers and every 3 minutes another person unwillingly joins the fight. I have been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the battle and help those living with blood cancers. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has nominated me as a team leader in their 9th annual Students of the Year fundraising challenge. I could not be more excited to make a difference in the lives of patients across the country. I am proud to lead my campaign team and work towards our goal to raise $35,000 during the next 7 weeks - from January 22nd to March 12th.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the largest contributor to blood cancer research in the nation. I am honoring those who have battled blood cancers and raising money that will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding mission to find a cure and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS has invested over $1.3 billion in research to date. Along with my team, I will work to increase awareness about the impact of blood cancers and the cutting-edge treatments that are currently being researched, as well as inspire others to join the fight to find a cure.
LLS research has a huge impact on the treatment of other cancers, as well. Treatments developed for blood cancers are now helping people affected by over sixteen different types of cancers. My campaign provides an opportunity to support the critical work of LLS in fighting these diseases. It would mean a lot to me if you would consider donating to our campaign.
If you would prefer to mail your donation, please make your check payable to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and print “Steven Allen” in the “Memo” section. The deadline for receiving contributions is March 12th, but I’d like to encourage you to donate by February 18th as those donations determine who is invited to the Grand Finale event. Please note: your donations are tax deductible.
Aside from donations, we would love to hear from you or someone you know who would be willing to donate goods or services for auction items, sponsorships, ads, or other possible fundraising opportunities. Large or small, your contribution to this worthy effort will be greatly appreciated.
Help be part of the cure and help my team compete in the Students of the Year campaign. For more information, please contact me at 703-431-0973 or e-mail me at: sa245943@gmail.com. Steven's Students of the Year Fundraiser
I have signed up to save lives with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and am working to raise as much as possible over the next 7 weeks. Every dollar raised counts as one vote for my campaign. The candidate(s) whose team tallies the most votes earns the prestigious title of Student or Students of the Year. Will you help me earn that title?
As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org
