The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was built on the vision of a better world - one without blood cancers.
I’m proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign. Due to the personal impact cancer has had on my family, I have dedicated time and effort to raise as much money as possible for LLS’s mission.
My honoree is my mother, Heather Gibbons, who shared the news of her Lymphoma diagnosis with me and my younger brother and sister three years ago. She was already enduring a daily battle with a connective tissue disorder and rheumatoid arthritis, so having to battle cancer as well was devastating news. In the past 36 months, I've watched her number of medications increase considerably, received texts from her during visits to the hospital for chemotherapy and other treatments (including an extended stay when she got COVID), and listened to her medical experiences and updates. During this time, she has helped me focus on schoolwork, attended soccer and flag football games, and has provided much needed emotional support. My mom has exemplified a courageous spirit and that's why I'm fighting for her by raising money for LLS through their SVOY program.
As a Sophomore at Milton High School, I want to make a profound difference in the world and to those in need. I formerly attended St. Jude Catholic School for elementary and middle school, and attend St. Jude Church, where I have experienced first-hand the impact community service has on others. This has inspired me to continue on this path. Between now and the end of Feburary, I have the opportunity to focus my mind and energy on helping my mom rather than sitting on the side lines and worrying about her potentially life-robbing illness. I've set a goal of $30,000 and asked many of my friends to join my effort. We are called Team Cancer Crushers. YOU can also help and show support by sharing my URL link and giving what is meaningful to you. The more people reached and donations received, the closer we get to crushing blood cancers!
As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS:
- Funds cutting-edge research leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine that are improving and saving the lives of patients
- Provides free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, including personalized, one-on-one support, assistance with identifying and enrolling in clinical trials, and more.
- Mobilizes thousands of advocates to drive policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has pledged 65 million dollars to lifesaving global cancer research this year. Past research efforts have led to treatments like Rituxan, which is what my mom regularly receives every other month. I am incredibly grateful that this medication has been working to minimize the symptoms of her disease without causing serious side effects. Our campaign will provide support to the critical work of LLS in hopes that no one will have to watch a parent suffer with cancer or lose a loved one. We know with YOUR help, we can reach our goal and make a direct impact in the battle against blood cancers.
Please consider joining this fight by making a donation here and sharing this link with as many contacts as possible. Every penny and effort counts! All donations are greatly appreciated, tax-deductible, and your company may have a matching program.
