Wendy's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Mary Weck was a gifted pediatric physical therapist. She was a student of the science of teaching children to walk, a practitioner in the art & elegance of gait & posture and a miracle maker of moving with ease. Mary dug deep into the science and fervently shared her skill with the next generation of therapists and physicians.I was fortunate to be one of them.I saw first hand that  as much as Mary lived the commitment to the science of her work, she was even more devoted to the children she worked with and the families that loved them. Mary was a tough coach who welcomed a curious mind and never asked more of a person than she would give herself. And Mary gave.... endlessly....and into the wee hours of the morning and for decades. The world is a better place because of her. I am a better version of myself as a person and as a therapist for having known Mary, learned from her, observed her work, worked by her side and for having witnessed her life. Few people have touched as many -and as deeply-as Mary Weck. Her example is a high mark for a life well lived. Mary died from leukemia two years ago- today- on February 7 th, 2019. My participation in the Leukemia and Lymphoma campaign is in her honor. Please consider a donation for the Mary Weck in your life. Share your story. Give if you can. Every little bit helps.

With gratitude -  Wendy

World Cancer Day

Feb 02, 2021

World Cancer Day is February 4, 2021.

We all have someone in our lives who comes to mind on this day of cancer awareness. Many of those loved ones likely benefited from the work and research supported by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society because these research initiatives and breakthroughs provide information and direction used across many types of cancer treatment. Today, LLS is currently funding 250+ research grants around the globe and has dedicated over $1.3 billion to cancer research since 1949. We can't stop now, so much progress has been made. Be a part of the cure. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and life-saving impact today!

Thank you from Cecily's team, Go Go Gabi, and on behalf of all the people who continue to inspire us to make a difference.

Bright Spots!

Jan 27, 2021

Dear family and friends,

When young people in the face of sometimes daunting, relentless, difficult news and pandemic circumstances -nevertheless- choose to see possibility and act on behalf of others to do something good - well, they are bright spots in a sometimes gloomy world and their example is a call to the rest of us to join in.

Cecily Greblo, Madison West High School Junior, is one of those bright spots. This year she has the role of  student leader for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, leading team GoGoGabi during the student of the year fundraiser. When Cecily asked me to join her team, I said YES !

Gabi- our team hero- is another bright spot. She is currently a UW Madison student, studying industrial engineering, previous student campaign leader and lymphoma survivor. She battled her cancer in high school and has quite an inspiring story which you will want to read.

Cecily gathered her team in late August and she has been running ever since- running (yes, she runs x-country)  but also running meetings, presenting to businesses and keeping our team excited with possibilities and creative ways to reach out and expand the effort to cure blood cancer. You will want to read about the source her inspiration, her dad, too.

So, join the bright spots. Cecily and Gabi are inviting you and I am, too.

Read their stories.

Share yours.

Get inspired.

Donate if you can to honor your hero.

Every little bit helps.

Pass it on!

Join us!

Jan 16, 2021

Dear Friends & Family,

As we begin a fresh new year and steady ourselves from the up-ending pandemic of 2020, I am reaching out to wish you a happy 2021 and hope you will take my hand in the fight against cancer.

We all know someone who has battled cancer. We’ve seen and shared the toll that it takes - physically, emotionally, and financially for each person and those that love them.  The presence of cancer is unfortunately common, affecting one out of every three people today. In my work as a pediatric physical therapist at the University of Wisconsin in the Caring for Life Childhood Cancer Survivorship Clinic, these children and their families remind me of what is important in life every day and how precious life is. Today, I have decided to take a stand to fight cancer on behalf of the children I work with and in honor of my mentor, Mary Weck, who succumbed to cancer in February of 2019.

The invitation and opportunity to help the more than 1.3 million Americans who are living with blood cancer arrived through a fundraising effort, spearheaded by my ‘chosen’ niece, Cecily Greblo, a Junior at Madison West High School. Each year, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) conducts its Students of the Year competition in cities across the country. This year, I was asked to join Cecily's team and the Go Go Gabi! roster as a fundraising team member. I am delighted to have been asked to participate and will do my best to help Cecily and team Go Go Gabi! to reach our fundraising goals. It is an honor to participate in this program along side an such an outstanding group of high school students and, more importantly, I am humbled to be part of the effort to bring an end to cancer.

Once our campaign kicks off on January 16, I will be reaching out to all of you, my family and friends, to ask for your support. Your support will help Cecily's team GOGO GABI! compete and fuel the new LLS advancements in cancer treatments that are benefiting patients with many other types of cancer as well.

Read their stories. Get inspired. Join us. Give if you can.Every little bit helps. Pass it on.

I look forward to reconnecting with all of you soon.

Stay safe and well ~

Wendy

Wendy's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Aug 20, 2020

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page, welcome!

I encourage you to join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. By donating to LLS, you support the many facets of LLS’s mission work from investing in groundbreaking research, providing education and support to patients, and advocating at the state and federal level for legislation to help those living with cancer. My appreciation for your support cannot be overstated — each and every dollar donated to LLS brings us closer to our goal to end blood cancer and makes an impact for cancer patients and their families.

As a global leader in the fight to end cancer, LLS is committed to doing more for blood cancer patients and families than any organization in the world. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns drive critical support for its mission, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide since it was founded in 1949. Since the 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled.

Every facet of LLS’s mission – research, education and support, and policy and advocacy – work in harmony to put blood cancer patients and their families first. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases. That is why at LLS we say that beating cancer is in our blood.

Please visit my website as often as you can and share it with everyone you know who would also like to join us in the fight against cancer. Together, we have the power, the passion and the resolve to achieve a world without blood cancer. All donations are tax-deductible.

On behalf of cancer patients and their families everywhere, I sincerely thank you for your support!

In memory amd to honor one of the most loving, compassionate, driven amd selfless people I have ever known. Mary gave herself each amd every day to help the children she loved amd to teach amd mentor those of us around her. She loved being Mom and Grandma and lit up as she shared the stories and adventures. Mary left her heart with every person she touched. I am the person amd therapist that I am because of my time with her.

On March 4, 2012 we lost a bright light in our lives to CLL, my mother in law Joanne Herfel. Joanne spent her life quietly making life easier for others around her, never seeking repayment or recognition. She was generous, loving, kind and creative. She was an artist and a fantastic cook and used her talents to feed and create beautiful gifts for her friends and family. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She fought CLL with grace and dignity and was so grateful for the advances in research and drug development, like those funded by LLS, that helped give her more precious time with her family then her prognosis implied. This gift is in her memory and in honor of Gabby and everyone affected by leukemia.

Thank you, Wendy, for the opportunity to support cancer research and honor two amazing women. Mary Weck's kindness, generosity, and contribution to the treatment of people with CP (among countless other diagnoses) can not be underestimated. I am honored to have known her and to count her as my mentor. In addition, my beloved mother, Pat (Coleman) Morgan also died of cancer. She was generous beyond words and found a way to balance motherhood of her own 4 kids while welcoming other children who needed stability into her fold. All of that while climbing the ladder from a bank teller to a branch manager, to a troubleshooter who was sent into the worst-performing branches to turn them around. So proud of her. I look forward to living in a world without cancer.
