I, Joshua Saxton, have been selected to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
I am a ninth-grader from Aylen Junior High School in Puyallup, Washington. I am very passionate about community service outside of school. I am a part of March Gladness with Communities in Schools. I also tutor for fourth graders at a nearby elementary school through Tiger Math Tutors.
This is very important to me and my family since we have all been touched by blood cancer. My great aunt had Lymphoma, my great uncle died at age 5 of Leukemia, and my Uncle Ron is currently battling lymphoma. I never want to see anyone go through the same things my family has gone through. That is why I am so committed to doing this for LLS.
I also had the privilge of meeting Finn Cunningham, a blood cancer survivor with a great story. He was diagnosed in 2011 with Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Finn, now an 8 year-old, wants to give back in whatever way he can now that he is cancer free. Finn loves art projects, soccer, and basketball. He is very strong and gave me just another great reason to fight for this cause.
I am excited to help all the people who need help finding the cure for leukemia and lymphoma. Each dollar is very much appreciated because the candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student of the Year. I want to help raise money to find a cure to all blood cancers, and maybe even all cancers, along with bringing awareness to the issue of childhood blood cancers.
Since the early 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have grown by double, triple and even quadruple. The work done with LLS doesn’t just help those with blood cancers. The research made can also help those with other terrible diseases like: skin, breast, liver, stomach, and brain cancers, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s Disease. This makes it even more important for every possible dollar towards this research.
All donations are greatly appreciated and are completely tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for those in need of medical care.
Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!
