The Students of the Year campaign just kicked off Tuesday, March 5th. I am so excited to begin fundraising! More information to come on our upcoming events, stay tuned. 

My name is Sophie Stinnett. I am currently a junior at Rowland Hall High School. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, soccer, and golf, as well as the piano and saxophone. I am a huge Utah Jazz fan, and love watching NBA and college basketball. 

My dad is an Oncology doctor, so I hear stories about blood cancer, and various other cancers, affecting the lives of many people every day. These stories, as well as many others motivated and inspired me to run for Student of the Year this year. 

The 2019 Students of the Year program is a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am raising critical dollars to fund life-saving research and improve the lives of patients and their families. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the common form of cancer in children and teens.

I am running in honor of Ashtyn Poulsen, our Honored Hero. Ashtyn was first diagnosed with leukemia in 2013 as a 12-year-old. After going into remission, she received a bone marrow transplant. In 2016 she relapsed, went back into remission, and received her second bone marrow transplant. In 2018 she relapsed again, and received a third bone marrow transplant in August. As of today, Ashtyn continues to fight infection as she beings the road to recovery once again. She is a definitely a hero to me. 

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.
