Abbey's Angels

Feb 18, 2019

My name is Abigale Hunting and at the age of two I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. That was a devastating blow to my family because my dad was starting his first job teaching second grade, my mom was pregnant with my little sister Kaylee, and we were trying to move into a new house. My parents felt overwhelmed with the daunting news. I was too young to realize that my life was in jeopardy, but I can still see the pain in my parents eyes when we talk about those times and the fact that they could have lost me. Thankfully the community rallied around my family and I, providing help, support, and comfort. There were so many acts of kindness that lifted my family, giving them strength to continue on. One example was a Floor company that put a new wood floor into the house we were trying to move into. The wood floor was well appreciated because the old carpet had cat poop all over, and with my cancer I would not have physically been able to live their. Then another act of kindness was two of my dad's second grade students did a lemonade stand to raise money for me. They raised twenty-five dollars, even though it was something small, I treasure their kindness still today. Another thing people did for us was they gathered toys together so my brother and I could have a christmas that year. These stories warm my heart! I have come to think of these people as angels. They were angels to my family and I, giving us hope that there was still light at the end of the tunnel. Now it is my turn to be an angel to those who are going through the same challenges as my family and I went through. This Fundraiser, Students of the Year, gives me the opportunity to pay their kindness forward and be an angel in others lives. This is why I am fundraising.

You can be an angel too. Every dollar counts. Every dollar saves a life. Every dollar brings us one step closer to curing cancer.

I am honored to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am proud to be raising critical dollars in honor of a young patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.

Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate!

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!
