My name is Emma Nimnicht and I am a sophomore at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville who is currently working on the “Golden Group” team for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student of the Year campaign. For seven weeks, starting January 17th, 2019, my team, lead by the Academy of the Holy Names Juniors Katelyn Chau and Lauren Jones, will be raising awareness of the research, programs, and advocacy being conducted through the LLS. All of this is only possible through your support in the form of both donations and sponsorships. With your unwavering compassion, my team, alongside students from across the country, have the opportunity to beat blood cancer once and for all.

I got involved in this campaign because of my cousin Owen. He was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in September of 2016. After almost a year of fighting, Owen sadly passed away September 2nd of 2017, 23 days before his 13th birthday. I am apart of this campaign to honor the life of my cousin Owen. It was devastating having to watch someone you love suffer from something as aggressive as cancer. Owen will always hold a special part in my heart. My goal is to raise money to give others a better chance of beating cancer. And, I plan to do anything I can to honor him and help others suffering from cancer. Throughout Owen's life, he was always making others smile. He spent every day with purpose and I hope to do the same! Even though I don't get to see Owen anymore, I know he is watching over me! When the sky turns orange, that is my way of knowing that he is at peace! Thank you for hearing my story and I hope that you will help join the fight and cure cancer! 

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s work is changing the lives of 1.2 million Americans living with a blood cancer. In fact, the treatments that LLS is funding benefit all cancer patients due to the fact that more than 40% of the new cancer treatment drugs approved by the FDA since 2005 started as blood cancer drugs but are now being applied in other forms of cancer.
