Welcome to Selena Olvera's SOY Fundraising Page!
Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you may know, my connection to cancer started 1 month before turning 2 years of age. For many years as I was growing up my mother was afraid to lose me. I was under chemotherapy treatment from December of 2003 through February of 2006. I remember being in the hospital, day after day, and hour after hour, just watching time go by. Because of the chemotherapy I lost my hair, and my father worked night and day to be able to take care of us since my mom had to take care of me 24/7. Disregarding all the pain, I won't lie, I did have lots of fun and the people there were always really nice to me and sweet. I got to participate in the Make a Wish program and meet new people. Fortunately, I am a survivor and have been growing up well and healthy! For this experience I decided to give back to those who gave to me and say “thank you”, since not many make it through. If it wasn't for all those people I wouldn't be here today, living, breathing, and having the best time ever. My connection to leukemia has allowed me to benefit from the support and research of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Finding a cure for blood cancers drives me to want to make a difference!
This year, I am privileged to be a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) 2019 Students of the Year Campaign. The Students of the Year Campaign is a seven-week fundraising competition to raise money to support LLS. I am asking you to help me assist the efforts of LLS to find a cure for blood cancer. From January 10 to March 1, my goal is to raise over $10,000! Yes, you read that correctly, more than $10,000 in just 7 weeks, which will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding mission to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Blood cancers make up almost 10% of all new cancer diagnoses with 152 people dying from blood cancers every day, but they often do not receive the same level of attention as other types of cancer. People are surprised to learn that 40% more people die from blood cancers (56,630) than from breast cancer (40,730) each year. These statistics emphasize the need for a cure for blood cancers.

Please make your check payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and write “Selena Olvera” in the memo line. Donations must be received by March 1, 2019. Don’t forget to request a matching donation if your company matches!
Every day we are closer to finding a cure. With your help, through donations and spreading the word of my campaign, we can save families the devastation of having to lose a child, niece, or cousin to a blood cancer. Due to the generous donations in the past 50 years, the survival rate of children with leukemia went from 3% to 90%. I believe it can be 100%.
I appreciate your time and your consideration of donating to my campaign so much more than you will ever know. Every dollar we raise will help save a life.
Sincerely,
Selena Olvera
2019 Students of the Year Candidate
Welcome to Selena Olvera's SOY Fundraising Page!
I am honored to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am proud to be raising critical dollars in honor of a young patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.
Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
We really are changing the face of blood cancer!
All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.
Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!
