Welcome to Makayla Banton's Fundraising Page!

Jan 31, 2019

Only four weeks until our Grand Finale celebration! We have now raised over $5,000, halfway towards our goal! Thank you to our anonymous donor, along with Laura Black and Lilian and Lindsay Tade. I am so grateful for everyone's donation and consideration of helping Cultivating Cures's cause! Even though we have gotten this far, I am determined to get to our goal of $10,000, and we have $5,000 left to go! Please consider giving to this cause and helping cancer patients around the world.

Also, there will be a profit share night at Torchy's Tacos in Belterra Village on Tuesday, February 5. We will receive 15% of the proceeds from the sales between 4:00 and 8:00 pm. Please try to come and show the person taking your order the attached document below.

Thank you for your support!

Week Two

Jan 23, 2019

Week two has come to an end. We have now raised over $4,200, which means that we need $5,800 to reach our goal! Thank you to this week's donors, Randy Banton, Ariana Chandler, and Russell Banton! I really appreciate your contribution to our cause! Those of you who haven't donated yet, please consider! Even a couple of dollars helps in the long run! It could be your donation that allows a cancer research project to have enough funding to continue and make the lives of cancer patients improve!

If you are unable to donate at this time and still want to help, spread the word and share the link to this website (on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and/or help me get in touch with other individuals or companies who can contribute.

Let's all help cure cancer together!

Welcome to my Students of the Year page!

Jan 10, 2019

Dear Friends and Family,

I am honored to inform you that the South Central Austin Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has nominated me as a candidate in their 3rd-annual Students of the Year fundraising challenge. I could not be more excited to make a difference in the lives of patients across the country!

Unfortunately, each of our lives has been touched by cancer in some way. My mom was diagnosed with brain cancer in March of 2012, and her illness has progressively worsened through radiation treatments, surgeries, and now chemotherapy. Watching her suffer has motivated me to do something to help cancer patients, and LLS has provided me with this opportunity.

Did you know that, between 2000 and 2017, approximately 40% of cancer-fighting therapies approved by the FDA were first approved to treat blood cancer patients, and many of these have gone on to help other types of cancer patients? For example, Gleevec®, first approved to treat patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, is now approved for certain rare forms of stomach and skin cancers, and Rituxan®, first approved to treat lymphoma patients, is now approved to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. LLS's tireless work on behalf of patients is truly inspiring.

LLS is an amazing non-profit organization whose fundraisers help provide research for blood cancers (Hodgkin’s disease, myeloma, leukemia, and lymphoma). LLS offers support for patients, survivors, their families, and as I just mentioned, helps to advance the science behind other cancers through its research. Unfortunately there is no early detection for blood cancers, only the search for a cure.

My team, Cultivating Cures, has set a goal of $10,000 to reach by the end of this 7 week campaign. The 7 week campaign will commence on January 10, 2019 and end with a Grand Finale Celebration on March 1st where Austin’s Student of the Year will be announced. Every dollar counts as a “vote” towards my campaign, and the student with the most “votes” will be named the winner.

My competitors have written similar letters to their family and friends seeking donations, so I ask that you give in whatever capacity you feel comfortable with to support my fundraising efforts before the March 1st deadline. All donations are tax deductible, and you can give by making a donation on this website or by mailing a check to:

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Students of the Year

Please make your check payable to: “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society” and print “Makayla Banton” in the memo section. You can also help raise funds by inviting others to donate, inquiring with your employer about corporate matching programs, and sharing content from my webpage on social media. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you would like to attend our campaign-ending Grand Finale Celebration or to receive sponsorship information/discuss in-kind donations.

Thank you so much for your help, as everyone wins when cancer loses and it is your gift that makes a difference!

Sincerely,

Makayla Banton

Making a Difference

Dec 27, 2018

My mom was diagnosed with brain cancer in March of 2012. My whole family has been dealing with the struggle of watching her become progressively worse and worse through radiation treatments, surgeries, and now chemotherapy. Through this struggle and chaos, our normal is now dealing with the fight against cancer, day in and day out. I have since been motivated to help cancer patients in any way that I can, and LLS has given me the exact opportunity I have been hoping for. Even though my mom doesn't have blood cancer, so much of LLS's research has been an aid in breakthroughs in the search for different cancer cures. Approximately 40% of cancer-fighting therapies approved by the FDA were first approved to treat blood cancer patients, and many of these have gone on to help other types of cancer patients.

I am so excited to work with my team, Cultivating Cures, to raise as much money as possible to help as many cancer patients as we can. I hope that you can help by donating even a few dollars to help this cause. Even a small amount of money can make a large difference in funding cancer research. It is your gift that makes a difference in the fight against cancer!

Sincerely,

Makayla Banton
