Geethika's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Mar 25, 2021

Hi, thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Welcome!

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, in the United States around every three minutes a person is diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. In just 2020, approximately 178,520 were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. These three blood cancers have also caused the deaths of 56,840 people in the United States during 2020. Around 1.3 million people in the U.S are either living with leukemia, lymphoma, hodgkin’s disease, myeloma, or are in remission.

As we all know, cancer is one of the biggest causes of death in the world today, and it can affect anyone. Although there are researchers that are working their hardest to cure cancer, there is still much research that needs to be done in order to create a cure. That is why I am asking you to donate. Doctors and researchers can only do so much, but it is also our responsibility to help cancer patients, because if we don’t, who will?

My name is Geethika Tammana and I am a freshman at Pleasant Grove High School. I am also part of Team In It To Cure It in partnership with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is an organization that strives to cure Leukemia, Myeloma, Hodgkin's disease, and Lymphoma and better the lives of blood cancer patients. I joined Team In It to Cure It because cancer can affect anyone, and I want to contribute, even in the smallest way, to make blood cancer patients’ lives easier. Through donations, the research on finding a cure for blood cancers would become improved. These donations would also help to increase the survival rates for patients living with these cancers. Additionally, LLS uses the donations to provide education and support to blood cancer patients in order to make their lives as easy as possible.

Team In It To Cure It is diligently working to collect donations from generous and benevolent people. I would really appreciate it if you could donate to LLS. No matter the amount, even the smallest donation can have a significant impact in our campaign. Your donation would go towards advancing research on cures for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Hodgkin’s disease. It would also help improve blood cancer patient’s lives and make their families lives easier. Please consider donating, because your donation could bring us one step closer to reaching our goal.

If you would like to learn about the basic gist of Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Hodgkin's Disease are, please continue reading:

  • Lymphoma is what a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system (which is part of the immune system) are called. Hodgkin lymphoma (or Hodgkin’s disease) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are the two main types of this blood cancer.

    • The difference between the two is that Hodgkin lymphoma occurs when there is a cell known as a Reed-Sternberg cell present in the lymphoma tissue. However, this cancer is one of the most curable types.

    • Non-Hodgkin lymphom(NHL) consists of a various group of diseases. The most common one is distinguished by a B-cell type. Others can contain a T-cell type or an NK-cell type. A fast-growing case of NHL can be cured, but for people with slow-growing lymphoma the disease can last for years.

  • Myeloma, however, is caused when plasma cells--a type of white blood cells--begin multiplying and eventually lead to white blood cells being crowded out. Due to this, the immune system ends up malfunctioning. It first forms in the bone marrow, so myeloma can lead to damaged bones.

  • Leukemia is when a leukemia cell forms in the bone marrow. This cell begins reproducing much faster than regular cells, and eventually leukemia cells grow and survive better than normal cells. As time passes, the leukemia cells end up suppressing the development of normal cells. Due to the many different types of leukemia, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia or chronic myeloid leukemia, the rate at which this cancer progresses can vary.

  • (^All these definitions can be found on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society website at https://www.lls.org/leukemia, https://www.lls.org/lymphoma, and https://www.lls.org/disease-information/myeloma

Please visit my website as often as you can and share it with everyone you know who would also like to join us in the fight against cancer. Together, we have the power to achieve a world without blood cancer! (All donations are tax-deductible) Donations can also be in the form of sponsorships, digital program ads, silent auction items and more. My personal goal for this 2021 campaign is $3000 which I would hope to achieve through donations. Please reach out to me at your email with any fundraising ideas!

On behalf of cancer patients and their families everywhere, I sincerely thank you for your support. Together, we are in it to cure it!!!
