Students of the Year Sacramento

Team Cancer Slayers

Our Honoree

Feb 24, 2019

We would like to introduce you to someone. This year, the Students of the Year Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is raising funds in honor of a very special young girl. Her name is Taylor. About 2 years ago, in December 15th, Taylor was admitted to the hospital due to a double ear infection, where she lost hearing in both her ears. Her infection was treated with antibiotics, and her hearing came back. Two weeks afterwards, she started to develope 2 masses on either of her temples. She was brought back into the hospital after experiencing headaches. The doctors ran a bunch of tests and it was 8 hours later that the doctors diagnosed her with cancer.  She was diagnosed with T Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia and started her chemotherapy the next day. She was only 5 years old the day her life changed forever.

During her treatment, Taylor was addmitted over 40 times to the hospital, had 10 rounds of cranial radiation, 15 rounds of chemotheray and steriods, over 18 blood or platet transfusions, 4 bone marrow biopsies and 23 lumbar punctures. She was forced to miss over a year and a half of school, and suffered from side effects that caused her to sleep for 18-20 hours a day for 3 weeks and to lose her ability to walk.

After a year of physical therapy she regained her ability to walk and keep up with her peers. Through it all, she smiled an dgave back to those who were going through chemotherapy, just like she was. On May 24th, 2018, Taylor completed the treatment phase of her protocol.

Today, Taylor is in 3rd grade. She loves to dance, doing art, swimming, playing with her friends and going to school. Some day she wants to be a pediatric nurse or a child life specialist and to help kida with their cancer treatment.

We had the honor of meeting such a strong, courageous, bright young lady who will continue to grow into an amazing young lady. Through LLS, families just like Taylor's are able to recieve the help the help they deserve. Your donation can save the lives of people just like Taylor, who are fighting for their lives. With more information about Taylor and her story, please visit her Facebook page at https://m.facebook.com/Taylorleesbutterflies/.

On behalf of Taylor, her family, other patients across the globe and their families, we thank you for supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Our Mission

Feb 26, 2019

We are so honored to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Together we are Team Cancer Slayers and we are representing Woodcreek High School, Roseville High School, Rocklin High School, Whitney High School, and Miraloma with this campaign. We are incredibly excited to participate in this campaign because most of us have had relatives or close family friends who have been diagnosed with cancer; after experiencing the impact that cancer has, we want make a difference and ensure that millions recieve the revolutionary treatments and cures that LLS funds! Our goal is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. As you can see, LLS truly makes a an enormous impact and has saved millions of lives.

LLS would not be able to fund these revolutionary advances without your support! All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. In fact, $0.79 of every dollar is put into blood cancer research! Your donation will not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need!

Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate! Also follow our instagram page @thecancerslayers!

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere,

We thank you for your support!
