Olivia Gilchrist | Team In For A Cure's Campaign Team
Olivia's Students of the Year Fundraiser
It is an incredible honor to be a co-candidate for the 2021 Students of the Year campaign. For seven weeks, from January 7 to February 27, 2021, select high school students around the country will participate in a competition to raise awareness of the research, programs, and advocacy being conducted through LLS in addition to funds to support their mission to cure blood cancers. Alongside my close friends Bella Clark and Karah Post, I am working to raise $50,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the campaign.
Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another. Multiple people close to me, including both friends and family, have undergone a battle with cancer. It is estimated that 15,780 children between the ages of 0 and 19 in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year (American Childhood Cancer Organization). Furthermore, Leukemia accounts for nearly 40% of childhood cancer diagnoses. Not to mention, every 3 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every 9 minutes, someone dies from one.
LLS is a truly incredible organization working towards the goal of ending blood cancer and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Through investment in groundbreaking research, educational resources and individualized support for patients, and advocacy at both the federal and state level for legislation to help those living with cancer, LLS is monumentally impacting the effects of blood cancer and effectively rewriting the story of cancer in many lives. Since 2017, LLS helped advance 55 of the 65 FDA approved treatments. Additionally, LLS funded more than 60% of the blood cancer therapies now being used to treat other cancers. The diseases being benefitted by LLS's research funding is not limited to blood cancers; treatments for Parkinson's, Dementia, Alzheimers, and numerous other cancers and diseases have stemmed from blood cancer research. Currently, my great-aunt is battling Parkinson's and my great-uncle is battling Alzheimers, but I know that through LLS's funding of blood cancer research, they will benefit as well.
Despite tremendous growth in our knowledge and treatments for blood cancer, there is still so much to do. Each and every dollar donated to LLS brings us closer to our goal to end blood cancer and improves the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Please join me in my fundraising effort by making a donation and sharing this page with family and friends. Every dollar counts, and together, we have the power, the passion and the resolve to achieve a world without blood cancer.
Every donation is tax-deductible. On behalf of cancer patients and their families everywhere, I sincerely thank you for your support. Beating cancer is in our blood!
Thank you,
Olivia Gilchrist

This heartfelt donation is made in honor of my mom, Lilo, who passed away in April 2018 from Leukemia following a three year battle. She was healthy, strong and had no family history of cancer. Her own mom lived 98 years. If there were a cure available to her, I believe she would have lived far longer. Cancer is modern medicine's "final frontier" and i hope someday kids like mine wont lose their grandparents before they should, or their mothers, fathers, siblings and of course their own children. I continue to donate blood frequently as a way to give back, as she received weekly transfusions. Thank you Olivia and friends for joining the fight against Leukemia.
