I am incredibly honored and excited to have been nominated to participate in the Students of the Year campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). On January 10, 2019, we will kick off a 7-week campaign ending March 1, 2019, to help save lives by funding research treatments, and valuable support for patients and families as they battle blood cancers. This is a competition in which the candidate team that raises the most money will be named Student of the Year, but it's more than just who can raise the most money. It's important for me to bring attention to all the work that the Leukemia and Lymphoma society does with their powerful purpose of finding a cure.

Many of my family members and friends have battled and still are battling various cancers. My grandma got diagnosed with breast cancer when I was very young and I still remember the little things. I remember her shaving her head alongside my uncles and my brother as well as shopping for wigs and cute hats with her. I'm beyond thankful she is still with me today and is 9 years cancer free, she inspires me every day for how strong she is. The most crucial thing I learned watching her and other loved ones fight cancer is the importance of having that support system and supporting research for treatments.

Since the start of 2017, 38 new treatments were FDA-approved for blood cancer patients, 31 of which were funded by LLS. At The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. What inspires me the most is that LLS’s outreach is not limited to blood cancers; many of the LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases (ex: Parkinson's, Diabetes, Alzheimers, etc.).

I can't wait for this 7-week journey and am privileged to be working with such a meaningful organization. I want to be able to give these patients hope again and an opportunity to be a part of the rising survival rates, but I need YOUR help!
