Students of the Year Newport
Ethar Altekreeti | Ethar Altekreeti's Campaign Team
Welcome to Ethar Altekreeti's SOY Fundraising Page!
Dear Friends,
My name is Ethar Altekreeti. I am 15 years old, and am currently a freshman at Tollgate High School. I am honored to take
part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Students of the Year” Campaign this year. The LLS Students of the Year Campaign
is a national 7 week fundraising competition in which participants vie for the title of Student of the Year. The title of Student
of the Year is awarded to the participant who raises the most funds during the 7 weeks of the campaign.
I am humbled to have the opportunity to partake in the campaign this year.
This year, the Students of the Year campaign will run from January 7th to
February 23rd. In these 7 weeks, it is my personal goal to raise $25,000. This
money will go directly to funding research for blood cancers and will
contribute to the mission of finding a cure.
Cancer touches the lives of many, and I am taking part in this campaign in the
efforts to help find a cure. This cause is especially close to my heart because
on July 2nd 2016, I was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I
will never forget this day. I was
rushed to the emergency room after
prolonged lymph node pain. After
what felt like hours of waiting for my
blood work, a shock came when the
doctors told my dad that I might
have Leukemia. My dad passed out and I started crying. The situation was
unbelievable because we had never had a family member with cancer. We then went
back home to tell my mom and sister, who then headed up to Hasbro Children’s
Hospital with us. Little did I know, I would be there for 40 days. My chemo treatment
then started. The day I started losing my hair was worse than the day of my
diagnosis. I felt so empty inside. I did not know how to react, I just couldn’t believe
this was real and happening to me, so I just sat there shaking. After 2 years of
treatment, most of my hair has come back and I have proven to cancer that I am
much stronger than a disease. Though I am now cancer free, every 4 minutes
another person is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 10 minutes someone
loses their battle.
On July 31st 2018, I finished chemotherapy and was declared cancer free. Although the journey was not easy, some amazing
things came out of it, such as meeting my doctors, nurses, some of my best friends and other patients. I am running for
Student of the Year this in honor of one of my best friends, Ella Integlia, who is a survivor and the 2019 honored hero, along
with the little boy in the hospital room next to me, Kaydin, who passed away and whom I will never forget, and so no other
child has to endure what my friends and I did.
All donations must be received no later than February 22, 2019 in order to be credited to reaching my goal by the end of this
year’s campaign. Please join me and consider making a donation that will change and save the lives of so many.
Thank you sincerely,
Ethar Altekreeti
