Mequon to Manaitowoc. Manitowoc to Potowatomi State Park. July 21, 2018. First day of Scenic Shore, 75 miles, 20 miles in rain. with my frriend, Amanda.
July 9, 2019: THANK YOU DONORS!! You have donated more than $1,000 so, now, I have automatic registration for the 2020 ride. Thank you so much. We are less than two weeks out from our ride. Today, I rode 30 miles and felt great....am looking so forward to this annual event!!
In July, for the 19th consecutive year, I'll be riding the Leukemia and Lyphoma Society's Scenic Shore 150, a two-day, 150 mile bike ride that raises money for leukemia and lymphoma research and honors those who have battled these diseases. This year, I will ride in memory of Tom Younger, my friend who died in December, 2018 after battling multiple myeloma for eight years. Tom was fond of saying "life is a beautiful ride." I agree, so I'm asking for your support.
The other day, as I was pedaling along (wearing one of my SS jerseys), a man on a bike came alongside me (also wearing a SS jersey) and said: "Beautiful day for a ride, isn't it? I'm a 21-year survivor. Thanks for riding. I've ridden SS for 5 years and intend to keep it up." He made my day!! We rode several miles together, and I look forward to seeing him again.
The SS is a fully-supported cycling event, along the eastern shore of Lake MIchigan, that is open to riders of all ages and abilities. This year, more than 1,200 riders will pedal with one goal in mind: to beat blood-related cancers.
Beside Tom, I will also ride in memory of:
- Linda Hardy (1948 - 2000), EW, Kathy Smith Zaremba (1953 - 2016), Fannie, Tony, Edgar, Frances, Lisa, Lucy, Kem and Brian.
I will also ride in honor of:
- Roy Meyer, team mate, fellow cyclist. In 2013 and 2015, he was diagnosed with two different lymphomas. He received chemotherapy and has gone through a stem cell transplant, AND, has participated in SS since 2015; we have ridden many miles together. He is a beneficiary of LLS-funded research that developed rituximab, his life-sustaining drug. We look forward to riding together this year.
- ET: a friend who has ridden in SS for many years, and has recovered from Stage 4 lymphoma bone cancer.
- Two friends diagnosed with CML (chronic myeloid leukemia).
- And many others (MMW, SMK, CG, Danny, Frances, Edgar, Dan, Conor, Tom, Beth, Candyce, Nancy, Audrey, Brianna, Kevin, Richard, Tim, Paul, and Paul K).
My team, “The Lymphomaniacs”, was founded in 2009 with just a few cyclists; we now have more than 140 members. Our goal is to raise $130,000; as of today, we have raised about $80,607.50 (63%).
Thank you for your donation which supports LLS’s cutting-edge research that is responsible for tripling blood cancer survival rates, and education and support services for patients and their families through their cancer journeys.
Best Regards,
Katy
