Please join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter as we launch the 2015 Student of the Year Campaign!

Student of the Year candidates are high school students enrolled in Eastern Pennsylvania public or private schools who are interested in and enthusiastic about volunteerism, philanthropy, community outreach, and leadership. The Student of the Year campaign not only offers visibility in the community and local media but also demonstrates candidates’ excellence in leadership and community engagement for college applications and professional resumes.

The Student of the Year campaign is a seven-week initiative in which nominated high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Delaware Chapter.   Student of the Year nominees must submit an application (consisting of a questionnaire and essay). Each applicant will then go through an interview process with LLS staff.  Candidates are strongly encouraged to form teams  of three or more members to help with planning, fundraising, and logistics of the campaign.

The candidate who raises the most money at the end of the seven-week competition earns the title Student of the Year as well as a $2500 scholarship to the college or university of his/her choice while the second place fundraiser will receive a $1000 scholarship.  An additional three students will be selected to receive a Citizenship Award based on their campaign’s commitment to Community, Leadership and the LLS Mission.  Every candidate who reaches the minimum fundraising amount of $5,000 will also receive recognition for their achievement.

Application Deadline – Wednesday, October 8, 2014
Announcement/Kickoff Party – Mid-November
Campaign Launch -- Monday, January 5, 2015
Grand Finale Celebration – Saturday, February 22, 2015 (Philadelphia Four Seasons Hotel)

Students choose to compete to join the fight against cancer and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Leukemia is the number one cancer killer of children under the age of 20; therefore young people are helping other youth battling these devastating cancers.

Students rally their communities, schools and families to support their fundraising efforts.  Along with their own websites, students will work with LLS staff to set a fundraising goal and to develop an action plan to reach that goal.  LLS staff provides fundraising materials and support throughout the campaign.  Suggested fundraising methods include: letter writing/email campaign and social networking; however, each candidate and their team will brainstorm with staff to determine a plan for success that could include sponsorship, table sales, program ad sales and events.
