My name is Sara Habibipour, and I’m a sophomore at Palm Valley School and a student at Dance with Miss Lindsay. I am thrilled to inform you that I have been nominated as a candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2020 Student of the Year Award--a 7-week campaign to raise money for cancer research. 

I chose to accept this challenge because as a high school student interested in the field of medicine who has spent hours researching cancer biology, this project seemed like the perfect opportunity to contribute to finding a cure to this terrible disease. Both of my grandfathers died from cancer (kidney and lymphoma), and a close family friend was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, as well. Through these experiences, I have witnessed that cancer not only physically affects the patient, but it takes an emotional toll on the family who has to see their loved one under such harsh conditions. No one should have to hear, “You have cancer.” And pretty soon, no one will have to. A cure is not far from reach; all we need is you. Please join my team, Cancer Rebels, in fighting cancer. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, but let’s work together to make the future cancer-free. 

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. In fact, the LLS has funded 34 of the 39 cancer treatments since 2017. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!
