Leah Padden | Help Is In Our Blood
Welcome to Leah Padden's SOY Fundraising Page!
Welcome To My Students of the Year Fundraising Page.
Please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. Thanks to your support, my efforts, will help fund the therapies and treatments and help save lives today.
Each year The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) launches its Students of the Year fundraising campaign, and I was honored to join this year’s efforts as a 2018 Students of the Year candidate for team Help is in Our Blood. Alongside my two friends Wynn Dietzler and Gabby Brutman, I am writing today to ask for your support of LLS’s mission in its efforts to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle this disease.
Starting on March 4th we are embarking on a 7- week journey to raise both money and awareness for all the blood cancers that effect so many people around the world. From March 4th – April 22nd our team goal is to raise $10,000 which will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding mission to find cures and ensure patients access to the treatments they need. If we raise $50,000 by June 30th we can link our team name to an LLS-funded research portfolio this year to honor our efforts to help people with blood cancers.
There are many reasons to be proud of supporting LLS’s efforts. For instance, of the 39 new cancer-fighting drugs approved by the F.D.A in the past 10 years, 19 of them were initially developed for blood cancers and many had funding from LLS. Of those 19, ALL of them show promise for treating other cancers:
-
Gleevec, used for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), was recently approved to treat stomach ulcers and is in trials for breast, prostate and ovarian cancer treatments.
-
Velcade, that targeted drug to treat patients with myeloma or mantle cell lymphoma, is also in trials for people with kidney, lung and thyroid cancers.
-
Rituxan, the first approved targeted cancer drug that was initially used for non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients, is used in 11 blood cancer and rheumatoid arthritis treatments.
Approximately every 3 minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with Blood cancer. Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and Myeloma are all horrific diseases that affect not only the quality of the patients’ life but also the people around them. My heart aches thinking of all the people affected by these diseases, but at the same it gives me new found hope and inspiration. After learning more about these blood cancers I could not just sit back and listen to how it takes a toll on so many lives. I want to be a part of a change, and the change starts here.
Through fundraising for LLS I believe I can make an everlasting impact and I cannot wait to start my campaign. With your help we can change the fate of cancer.
