Margaret and George Watler's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. It can cause a buildup of abnormal red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
AML tends to be aggressive. However, AML cells sometimes have gene changes that cause the tumors to grow but can be targeted with new drugs. Researchers are starting to look at whether genomic sequencing of tumor cells can help doctors choose the best treatment (such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, stem-cell transplant, or a combination of therapies) for each patient.
With your help, we can continue to help fund new treatment options for aggressive, rapidly spreading leukemias like the one that took our grandma.
AML accounts for about 1% of all cancers in the country
AML, also know as acute myeloid leukemia, is the most common type of leukemia. The symptoms of AML, which include fatigue, weight loss, fever, and others, may go unnoticed or written off as another problem, like simply being run down or having the flu. This is what happened to our grandmother, causing her to suddenly pass away. Febuary 10th marks the five-year anniversary of her passing. This feels like the perfect time to celebrate her life and legacy by donating a gift to LLS in her name.
Thank You Donors!
Margaret and George's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Hi 👋 Welcome To Our Fundraising Page.
I am very excited to share with you that my brother George and I are participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year program. Students of the Year is a 7-week philanthropic competition for high school leaders seeking to make an impact in the fight against cancer. This cause is incredibly important to us because we have seen the effects leukemia can have on others. Our grandmother, Linda Baker Carlson, passed away from cancer almost 5 years ago. Her cancer spread very rapidly, and it went undiagnosed until the last few days of her life. My brother and I have experienced the pain of losing a loved one and have witnessed the effects that loss can have on family and friends. Our grandmother is a reminder of how important it is to continue to invest in cancer research, and is serving as our inspiration over this seven week journey.
As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org

Margaret and George - Your Grandmother would be so proud of you both for your achievements and for honoring her in such a wonderful way. I shared many happy memories with Linda in our over 60 years of friendship. All her friends were heartbroken that she left us so soon, and we will always remember what a totally amazing, fabulous adventurous and strong woman she was. You were blessed to have her in your lives - even though it was too short a time.
