Welcome to My Page!

Hi, I'm Moriah! I'm a sophomore at Princeton High School. 2019 Student(s) of the Year is a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS has invested $1.2 billion in cancer research since 1949 and continues to support research through funding over 250 grants around the world and maintaining involvement with 19 of 21 blood cancer therapies approved in 2018. I am honored to participate in the SoY program on my good friend Elaina's team, Team Breakthrough! Elaina was nominated as a candidate for SoY by a former teacher because of her previous dedication and interest in helping cancer patients. As Team Breakthrough, we hope to fundraise for services and treatments for people who currently are battling or are in remission from a blood cancer. The dollars raised will not only support LLS-funded research but will also help provide critical information and support for patients, as well as support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.

How does SoY work?

Each dollar counts towards the team's total fundraised amount, whether generously donated on the candidate's page or a team member's page (like my own). The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens. About 1 in 3 cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed as leukemia.

Why am I participating?

It was estimated that upwards of 1.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2018, meaning countless individuals and families are affected by cancer every year in some way. Because cancer has affected my family and people I know, I would like to help as many people as I can. With financial support, research has grown increasingly effective and amazing treatments have surfaced, despite such dismal circumstances. In blood cancer patients specifically, five-year survival rates have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled since the 1960s. Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

LLS hopes to continue to introduce such revolutionary changes to our world. Team Breakthrough thanks you for your consideration and generosity.

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible.
