A Message From Our Honored Hero
While training for a triathlon in the spring of 2017, I began to experience severe fatigue. I went from being able to exercise for a few hours to not being able to run around the block. After visiting my primary care physician and a hematologist, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. My plan of care always focused on the end goal of having a stem cell transplant. I spent six of the next twelve months in and out of Virginia Hospital Center and Johns Hopkins as my doctors tried to prepare my body for a stem cell transplant. I had multiple rounds of chemotherapy in advance of the transplant. I had one setback after another including organ failure, pneumonia and many other infections that continually delayed the stem cell transplant. I received weekly blood and platelet transfusions and had countless trips to the emergency room in the middle of the night. Fortunately, by God’s grace, my amazing doctors and my brother, who was my stem cell donor, I was able to have a successful transplant in August 2018. My cancer has now been in remission for three years!
I am eternally grateful to my family, friends, doctors and nurses who have supported me over the years. One of those amazing support systems is LLS. LLS provides the critical resources that make a difference in the lives of people with blood cancers and I’m honored to work with their organization through their annual Light the Night campaign and First Connections program. The First Connections program allows me to speak with patients that are recently diagnosed with blood cancers. During these conversations, I’m able to share with them the hope that is offered by the wonderful work that LLS is doing to find a cure to all blood cancers!
Team proCURE's Students of the Year Fundraiser
Hello and welcome to our fundraising page!
All of us are working together to fundraise to save lives with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) over the next 7 weeks. Every dollar raised counts as one vote for our campaign, and the team that tallies the most votes earns the prestigious title of Student or Students of the Year. Will you help us earn that title?
We are raising money in honor of Robert Allred, an Acute Myeloid Leukemia survivor, husband, and father of four. Thanks to your support, our efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives.
Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers. Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
Every day, we are getting closer to a world without blood cancer!
All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
Please visit our website often and tell friends who would also like to donate! Or, you can check if your employer matches their employees' donations here.
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org
