Sarah Brennan | Team No Bad Blood

Sarah's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Jan 25, 2022

Welcome to my fundraising page!

My name is Sarah Brennan and I am a Senior at Alexandria City High School! I live in Alexandria, VA with my parents Christina and Dave and my sister Emily. I am captain of my school's cross country team and a member of the Varsity softball team. Outside of school I enjoy baking, reading, working out, volunteering, and political advocacy work.

I am so honored to be participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Students of the Year Campaign for a scond year! Over the course of the 7-week campaign initiative I will join other high school students from around the country in a competition to raise the most money for LLS in supoprt of their mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Last year I joined Team No Bad Blood as a team member and was blown away by the outpouring of support I recieved from family and friends. This year, I was nominated as a Candidate for Team No Bad Blood and along with my co-candidate we have built an incredible team. We have set a big goal, but with the continued support from our community, we are confident that we can reach our goal!

So many people have been impacted by cancer in some way and the campaign is more important than ever. Personally, this year I am honoring my cousin Sophia by continuing to raise funds and awareness to fight cancer and support all of those impacted. Sophia passed away this summer after a long, courageous fight with Leukemia. She worked closely with her local LLS chapters and assisted me throughout my campaign last year. This year, I hope to honor Sophia not only through raising funds but by bringing attention to blood cancers like Leukemia, which is now the most common form of childhood and teen cancer.

And the impact of LLS goes far beyong blood cancers!

Because of campaigns such as Students of the Year, LLS has been able to successfully discover new and more effective treatments for blood cancer patients and many of these have led to new discoveries for other forms of cancer as well.

- Since 2000, more than 40% of new FDA-approved cancer therapies started as blood cancer research

- LLS has helped advance 85% of blood cancer treatment options approved by the FDA since 2017

- LLS also established the LLS Children's Initiative in 2019 as a comprehensice $50 MILLION multi-year endevor to help children with cancer through every facet of LLS's mission:

          - More than doubling pediatric cancer research grant investments

          - Expanding education and support services for children and their families

          - Advocating and spearheading policies to help accelerate the development of new pediatric cancer treatments and breaking down barriers to care

Many therapies and treatments that began in LLS studies are now being used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They are now even being used across clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. In addition, LLS-funded drugs are now being used to help patients with certain non-cancerous diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Please join me in supporting LLS by donating to my fundraising campaign. With your support, we can help fund therapies and treatments that will help save lives.

Any donation is greatly appreciated and is tax deductable. Through donating, you are not only supporting LLS's research but patient services, advocacy, public education, and community services provided by LLS. Together we can FIND A CURE!

Please pass along the link to this fundraising webpage (link here: https://events.lls.org/nca/dcsoy22/sbrennan) to family, friends, neighbors, collegues, and anyone you can think of who may donate! I'll need all the support I can get to reach my goal!

Thank you for your support!

Sarah, Thank you for organizing this fundraising initiative. I am donating in honor of Megan Gray. She had ALL (leukemia) and was seven years old when she passed. She had a profound impact on my life and I feel like she was the angel that led me to a career in medicine. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her smile, giggle and positive outlook on life, even in the face of her illness. Wishing you much success, not just with this drive, but with all future endeavors! Best, Marnie Dardanello, MD

Best wishes on raising awareness and donations for a wonderful cause. My niece was the face of this LLS event a few years ago (Ohio) and when she was unable to attend her Freshman year of school or play basketball, it was one of the few things that brought her hope and a smile to her face.
