I am honored to be participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2022 Students of the Year campaign. I am a freshman at Stone Ridge and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Gators Beat Blood Cancer. During this seven-week campaign, high school students from across the country participate in a competition to raise money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and their mission: to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I am participating in this mission to honor my family and friends who have been personally touched by blood cancer. Since 2000, more than 40% of cancer therapies approved by the FDA have originated with blood cancer research, so not only is LLS impacting blood cancer patients but is also helping patients with various forms of cancer. The importance of this research has become more personal for me after my mom was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in March of 2013. It is because of LLS's past research that we could have confidence in her treatment and are so grateful she is now in remission.

 Since the 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled because of generous donations through campaigns like this. However, Leukemia still remains the number one most diagnosed cancer in children and teens. Our team was founded to support a student who was diagnosed with blood cancer during her time at Stone Ridge and we are proud to have continued this team into its 5th year. Because of this, our team's mission is to not only raise money but also to raise as much awareness as we can for something that impacts so many of our peers.
