The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns support research, education, and advocacy, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide. LLS helped advance 52 out of the 60 FDA-Approved blood cancer treatments since 2017 and has continued to provide free educational resources for patients and their families. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases. 

Each year, LLS dedicates the Student of the Year Campaign to honor a local patient or survivor. This year’s honored hero, Kory Coates, was a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) at the age of 15 after suffering from a mild stroke. Kory battled AML for seven months after his diagnosis, but he continued to excel in school despite the obstacles against him. After two years, Kory relapsed on August 26th, 2019, but he continued to fight and had a bone marrow transplant as his next course of treatment. Although he fought hard, he, unfortunately, passed away this December before completing his junior year of high school. Kory is the reason I am so passionate about fundraising for this campaign and why I am so dedicated to the LLS mission. 

This year, I was lucky enough to join LLS and start on Holton's team, Panthers Against Cancer. I'd always heard amazing things about LLS and its wonderful commitment to stopping cancer from friends who were involved.  Through these friends, I was able to observe and marvel at their hard work and determination in gathering donations to fund research for blood cancer. I was so glad to join and do my part in fundraising for such a great cause while simultaneously learning leadership skills, teamwork, and lifelong lessons. It would mean so much to me if you would join me in supporting LLS by donating to my campaign.
