The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is an organization with a special place in my heart. When I was in fourth grade, my mom was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukemia (HCL). Since her intial diagnosis, she has been very lucky to be apart of several clinical trials. These clinical trials have enabled her to fight back against cancer and help find a cure. LLS is partnering with the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation to fund up to $10 million in research over the next five years. These research grants are designed to "build a more comprehensive understanding of hairy cell leukemia, develop better therapies and optimize outcomes for patients with HCL." This is a BIG deal - only about 1,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with HCL each year, which means that research geared specifically towards HCL is rare. 

As a global leader in the fight to end cancer, LLS is committed to doing more for blood cancer patients and families than any organization in the world. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns drive critical support for its mission, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide since it was founded in 1949. Since the 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled. This has enabled cancer patients like my mom to led relatively normal lives. 

Every facet of LLS’s mission – research, education and support, and policy and advocacy – work in harmony to put blood cancer patients and their families first. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases. That is why at LLS we say that beating cancer is in our blood.
