The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns support research, education, and advocacy, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide. LLS helped advance 52 out of the 60 FDA-Approved blood cancer treatments since 2017 and has continued to provide free educational resources for patients and their families. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases.

Each year, LLS dedicates the Student of the Year Campaign to honor a local patient or survivor. This year’s honored hero, Kory Coates, was a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) at the age of 15 after suffering from a mild stroke. Kory battled AML for seven months after his diagnosis, but he continued to excel in school despite the obstacles against him. After two years, Kory relapsed on August 26th, 2019, but he continued to fight and had a bone marrow transplant as his next course of treatment. Although he fought hard, he unfortunately passed away this December before completing his junior year of high school. Kory is the one of the reasons that I am so passionate about fundraising for this campaign and why I am so dedicated to the LLS mission. 

Last year, during my sophomore year, I was a team member on Panther’s Against Cancer, and this year, I am excited to lead this legacy team and continue working with LLS alongside my co-candidate Sofia Fernandez. I learned a lot during last year’s campaign including outreach, communication, and organizational skills, and it was so incredibly rewarding to see my team’s efforts support patients and families in need and see LLS’s mission come to life. I am determined to contribute to an even greater impact by working hard to raise more funds and awareness for blood cancers this year. I can not wait to see what our team will accomplish with your kind support! Thank you so much for your continued generosity over the past two years; it means so much to me.
