My Experience with LLS: Beating Cancer is in Our Blood

Jan 10, 2020

I was first introduced to LLS my freshman year of highschool when my sister, Amber Amparo, wanted to run a campaign in 2018. Her team was called Las Estrellitas and was in honor of our grandmothers. Our team believed that this campaign would be a bright beckon of hope, similar to little shining stars, for cancer patients and their loved ones around the world. Her campaign truly inspired me follow in her footsteps and continue to make a change.

During my sophmore year, I decided to not run a campaign (yet!) but help out with LLS and the SOY campaign behind the scenes. Afterschool, my sister and I would go to the LLS office in Alexandria and help out in anyway possible. We wrote letters, we sorted papers, and we helped stuff cards for the 2019 SOY campaign. Through this experience, I was really able to see more of how passionate staff at LLS are about making a change in the world. Everyone at the office was so kind and grateful for the extra help, and it made me feel like even though I wasn't running a campaign, that I was still contributing and making a change!

And now here we are! Junior Year and I am blessed to be a candidate for Team Harmonizing A Cure. Our group is compiled with so many people that are just as dedicated to spreading awareness and finding a cure for cancer. I am so excited for kickoff! It is coming up sooooo soon and I cannot wait to share the amazing events and plans Team Harmonizing A Cure has in store for the 2020 Students of the Year Campaign! #14days!

Our Name: Harmonizing A Cure

Jan 10, 2020

Why Harmonizing A Cure?

When coming up with our name, Mariel, Risha and I wanted to pick something that we all related to. Us all being musicians, Harmonizing A Cure was perfect. I am heavily involved within the Performing Arts department at my school, especially the band department. I have been playing the trombone for the past 7 years and now play the bass trombone in the symphonic band, jazz band, and trombone choir. On top of that, I have been playing the baritone in our school's marching band.
Through the marching band program is where I became friends with Vishav. I previously met him through my sister, but with marching band, I had the honor of truly getting to know him. Vishav is LLS SOY's Honored Hero this year and he is a true example on why I love LLS's work and mission. I am excited to launch this campaign, raise money for research, and spread more awareness throughout my community. #41days

My Mission: Someday is Today

Jan 10, 2020

Welcome!

I am happy to share that The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has nominated me as a candidate in their 7th annual Students of the Year fundraising challenge, and I could not be more excited to make a difference in the lives of patients across the country. In 2018, my sister, Amber Amparo, ran a campaign and was able to make an amazing difference in her community. I am grateful to lead my campaign team, “Harmonizing A Cure”, and work towards our goal during the next 7 weeks from January 18th to March 7th.
The reason why I wanted to ru
n a campaign of my own this year was in honor of my friend and fellow marching band player, Vishav Chopra and my grandmother who passed away in 2008. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the largest contributor to blood cancer research in the nation. Along with my team, I will work to increase awareness about the impact of blood cancers and the cutting edge treatments that are currently being researched, as well as inspire others to join the fight to find a cure. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers.
