A year ago, Carson and I got involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society(LLS) for the students of the year campaign(SOY). Over the summer of 2018, our friend Hannah, who had leukemia when she was younger, asked us to join her campaign to raise money for LLS. Shortly after learning more about the organization, we found out how much they do for patients as well as their families and how LLS helps improve the lives of many through the amount of research and treatments they have funded. Carson and I believe that the two most meaningful statistics are:

• LLS funded 43 of the 49 FDA approved treatments for blood cancer patients since 2017

• Since 2000, more than 40% of the new cancer therapies approved by the FDA started as blood cancer research

These are significant because they show how big of a change LLS makes in our community.

Secondly, we joined LLS because of the impact of what happened to our family in 2018. After the death of our mom, we were greatly affected and had to figure out how to live our lives without her. Fundraising for LLS positively impacts families with cancer and other illnesses, preventing others from going through what we had to go through two years ago.

Due to the impact this research has for both blood and other various forms of cancer, specifically breast cancer, this campaign hits extremely close to home. Our mother always said how she did not like the imbalance of fundraising and awareness of breast cancer to other cancers, through this we feel as though we are fulfilling her mission.

The Students of the Year campaign is a seven week campaign that high schoolers raise money for LLS to fund treatments and further research. The goal of this campaign like others is to get closer to completing LLS’s mission, which is to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. 

As a result of having such an incredible experience last year, we decided this year to join again, however I have now taken over Hannah’s role as a candidate with two others for our new team, Pro Remedium! Last year, our team of seven raised over seventy-five thousand dollars, and the whole chapter raised 2.1 million over seven weeks. This year, as a team, we are hoping to raise eighty-five thousand, and  2.4 million as a chapter. There are seven weeks from January 18th until March 7th, when the campaign ends, to donate and once again help us reach our goal. As for now, Carson and I would greatly appreciate if you would save the date for January 18th, when the campaign starts!
