Students of the Year Washington DC
Ava Buffum | Team Rays of Hope 4.0
Welcome to Ava Buffum's SOY Fundraising Page!
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Story:
I am honored to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year. Our mission is both to raise money and to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.
LLS has supported therapies that not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!

Our Story:
Hi! My name is Ava Buffum. I am currently a junior at Flint Hill School. Having been affected by cancer in my family, I have so much passion to find cures for all types of cancer and have wanted to participate in this campaign since I was a freshman. Our school has been instrumental in supporting LLS over the years and I’m excited to have my own turn to contribute. I will also be raising money with my fellow candidates, Maggie McBride and Isabel Garcia-Sosa. As-well as our wonderful team members, Lara & Marisa Geib, Jessica Jarratt, and Justin Fraser, who all also attend Flint Hill School.
I am not only eager to fundraise for LLS because of their mission, but at a very young age I lost my father to lung cancer. I’m excited honor him by doing my campaign in memory of him, and to use this experience to further my knowledge about cancer research and take part in a cure.
