Anna's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Jan 12, 2021

Everyone has their own story, but we all share the losses caused by a common enemy, cancer.  The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a global leader in the fight against cancer and I want to join the team to help patients and their families. I want to take steps to change the landscape of, and eventually end, cancer.

I initially joined Ava and Andrew's LLS campaign because I wanted to raise money for cancer research in honor of my grandmother, who struggled with breast cancer several years ago. Fortunately, she was able to recover, and I can't express how grateful I felt knowing that there were people determined to help my grandma recover. Watching her having to undergo chemotherapy and other difficult procedures was not easy, and the uncertainty of whether she would be able to recover or not was always at the back of my mind whenever I was able to see her. That's not something I would ever want any other family to experience, and by joining this LLS campaign I get to help take steps towards a reality where anyone can beat cancer, without the dreaded uncertainty.

I still want to raise money in honor of my Mimi, however there is a second reason why I want to be apart of the LLS campaign, and it wasn't something I was aware of until after I had already joined. My mom is a pediatrician, and her job allows her to help kids all throughout the Charlotte area, and I remember one day a while back she came home from work but was having a really hard time. I asked her how her day was, and she told me that she had done a home visit for a little girl who was terribly sick, and that she figured out that this girl had leukemia, so she sent her to the hospital. I remember how distraught my mom was, and although my mom was glad that she was able to see how sick this girl was and get her to the hospital, she was also upset because cancer is a huge burden, especially for someone so young.
Flash forward to November of 2020, when Ava wanted to have her team meet a girl named Avery who was diagnosed with leukemia, and she wanted to hold the meeting at Abbott's, where I work. Well, when Avery's family got there, they naturally wanted to get some custard, so I got to make Avery and her sister some flurries with hot fudge and brownies, yum! Later, Mrs. Leckinger and Avery's parents were talking, and I suddenly heard my name. Mrs. Leckinger said: "That's Anna's mom!" and quickly waved me over. As it turns out, the girl that my mom had diagnosed with leukemia was Avery, and now I was getting to work with her and her family on this campaign. I couldn't help but feel like this was meant to be, that I was meant to be on this team!!

Our team is working to raise as much as possible over 7 weeks (Jan 17 - March 5). Every dollar we raise counts as one vote for my team. Team AAction has an aggressive goal of $100,00 and I want to help us get there!

Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers. Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.

We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!

All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Thank you for your support,

Anna

My grandmother battled Leukemia in her 60’s. Beat it and lived a very healthy and prosperous life until the age of 83 when it reared its ugly face again. Keep fighting the fight!
