Most Mother-Daughter dates consist of mani pedis and a shopping trip but that isn’t always the case. In 2012 my Grandma and Aunt were both diagnosed with cancer. They had mother-daughter dates to the hospital and got chemo together. In October of 2012, my Grandma lost the fight against lung cancer. Thankfully, my Aunt is now breast cancer free. Her blood cancer is chronic.  

I have been nominated as a 2019 Students of the Year candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). This is a seven-week fundraising campaign that lasts from January 17th- March 8th. My team, The Cancer Crushers, and I are working hard to reach our fundraising goal of $45,000, so that we may link our team’s name to a cutting edge research portfolio in honor of my Grandma, Joyce Upham. In order to reach our goal, we need YOU!  

Why LLS you ask? Well LLS has pumped over 1.2 BILLION dollars into cancer research. That research saved my aunts life and will help ensure another loss, like my grandma, doesn’t happen. In the last decade over 40% of the cancer research treatments and drugs came from LLS funded research, which is not only being used to treat blood cancer patients, but also those affected by other cancers and diseases, such as breast and liver cancers, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease.
