In January of 2020 we learned my grandfather, Mark Herman, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This is the first person in my family I am close to that has been diagnosed with cancer. The thought of losing him had  never crossed my mind until I learned this news. I couldn’t imagine my life without him. Geezer, as we affectionately call him, is always someone that has been there for me, no matter what time of day. When I was approached by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to work on this project for them it seemed very natural to say yes. I could see how important finding a cure for this disease was. Geezer is now in remission but he is still dependent on frequent blood transfusions and must stay on chemotherapy to help his body stay in remission. He is one of 30,000 people living in Louisiana and Mississippi with a blood cancer.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the largest contributor to blood cancer research in the world yet, the LLS also assists families with medical payments, living expenses, and travel assistance. This can help take a lot of pressure off of the people fighting this disease. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's mission is to ultimately find a cure, but also improve the quality of life of the current patients. Along with my team, I will work to increase awareness about the impact of blood cancer and the cutting edge treatments that are currently being researched, as well as inspire others to join the fight to find a cure!
