My name is Gabi Barreiro, daughter of Alba and Alejandro. I’m very excited to share with you that I am part of the 2020 Students of the Year campaign and over the next 7 weeks, I will be working to raise money and awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and their mission to find a cure for blood cancers.

In 2018, I heard the worst words anyone can hear; “you have cancer”. My diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma changed my life. I went from playing soccer and attending my sophomore year of highschool to receiving chemotherapy almost every week. I went through five rounds of intense chemo before receiving my final drug - brentuximab. The research for this drug was funded by LLS, and was approved by the FDA in early 2018. This chemo finished my treatment with less severe side effects, allowing me to return to school full time. I have been in remission since September 28, 2018, and recently celebrated one year out of treatment.

Despite the amazing advancements that has been made in cancer treatments, there is still work to be done. This is what pushed me to join Students of the Year.

It’s an honor to be part of a campaign that has made such a big impact in the lives of patients, survivors, and their families. After everything LLS has done for me and my family, I am so excited to give back to this great cause.

My personal goal is to raise $50,000 between January 9 and February 29. I can’t do this by myself. I am asking for your help to reach this goal.
