Team's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Jan 09, 2022

Gentry, Jesse and Joey, have been nominated to run as co-candidates in the 2022 Students of the Year campaign in support of The Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS). Students of the Year is a leadership development program for high school students who compete in a 7-week fundraising campaign designed to raise awareness and funds for blood cancers. Together, as Team Kickapoo,  we plan to raise $100,000 in the 7 weeks from January 20 – March 11. We know this is an ambitious undertaking, but we are incredibly passionate about this cause as all of our lives have been affected by blood cancers.

For us, our experience with cancer is first hand. All three of us were diagnosed with Leukemia when we were 3 and 4 years old. Our families met as we spent countless hours receiving chemo treatments at the dr. office. Along the way we developed friendships with so many other kids also batting cancer. This created a bond that most people would never understand. Team Kickapoo was forged in the dog days of summer as we spent our favorite week of the year at  camp together. During this week we could forget about being sick and have the opportunity to just be kids. Swimming, cabin decorations, playing nine square and prank wars with the girls cabins were the things that brought us a little joy in the darkest time of our lives. Over the years we have had to say goodbye to many of our camp friends as they have lost their battle with cancer. We are running for Student of the Year as Team Kickapoo in memory of our friend JC and all our summers in the Kickapoo cabin at camp. Having to say goodbye to so many friends is our motivation to kick cancer to the curb. We  would like to ask for your support as we raise money and awareness for a cure for blood cancer.

A couple of years ago it was suspected that I might have Leukemia. Very thankfully I did not. For some unknown reason I have for a long time had high white blood sell counts, but by the grace of God I remain healthy. I would be lying if I said I was not terrified until I received the negative results. I feel it is my duty to help with the fight against cancer and to help fund more research so no one else has to fight for their lives against this horrible disease. Go team Kickapoo!!! Sincerely, Lori Sullivan
