In 2010, I was diagnosed with ependymoma, a malignant brain tumor. I received chemotherapy and radiation therapy after brain surgery to remove over 95% of the tumor. It was a long 8 months, including a birthday, before I was declared cancer free and my family and I went on a celebratory trip to the Dominican Republic. I have been incredibly lucky and have been (mostly) healthy ever since. I still experience long-term side effects of my treatment, since chemo and radiation are so harmful to the body. I am so lucky to have received such effective treatment and want to help provide the same treatment to other patients. Each year, over 186K people in the US will be diagnosed with blood cancer. Approximately 158 people in the US die of blood cancer each day. As a cancer survivor of 12 years, I hope that we can create a cancer-free world.

With that in mind, I am proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign, working to raise money and awareness of LLS’s mission.

As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS has three main goals:

• Research blood cancers and develop new treatments to save lives.
• Provide free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, including one-on-one support, assistance with identifying and enrolling in clinical trials, and more.
• Advocate for policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.
