Rory McClain | Vikings for a Cure

Rory's Students of the Year Fundraiser

Feb 06, 2022

Hi, everyone!

My name is Rory McClain. I am 17 years old and a senior at Saint John's Catholic Prep. I am involved in many activities at school. I was very active in volleyball at St. John's, Frederick Volleyball Club, and Mid-Maryland Beach Volleyball Club during my freshman through junior year.  Unfortunately, I couldn't play senior year due to head and neck injuries. I am a member of the National Honors Society and an officer of our Environmental Club. I am a part of the Math Club, Black Student Union, and I am a student ambassador at St. John's.

I have signed up to save lives with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and am working to raise as much as possible over the next 7 weeks.

As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.

Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.

We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!

I decided to become a team member for 'Vikings for a Cure' for so many different reasons. Although I have not been affected by leukemia in my immediate family, I have seen my loved ones go through debilitating illnesses, which gives me sympathy for what cancer patients and their families go through. I recognize that this terrible cancer affects so many people worldwide. I am supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise as much money as I can for a phenomenal cause and to spread awareness of the beneficial ways to support cancer research. Also, this campaign is a great way for me to try new things and spend time with my teammates as I end my senior year!

Thank you to everyone who plans on donating or spreading awareness!

All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org

I am donating in honor of your great-grandfather, Robert P. McClain, Sr., who died from cancer in 1970 and my twin sister, Caroline, who also died of cancer in 1987. I wish you were able to know them. I'm proud to see how God is working in your young life and to see how He'll use you forever. Love, Grandpa
