My name is Nicholas Konish, I am a senior  at Notre Dame and I am running for the student of the year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Some of you know me and some of you don't, but I am pretty positive that no one knows the reason behind me doing this fundraising campaign for the LLS. Of course it's about helping to raise money for research and raise awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma, and of course it's because I want to help people. But the real reason is that I am a survivor of childhood cancer. When I was 3 years old I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and I was on chemotherapy for 3 years and 2 months. I beat this terrible disease and am now 17 years old and considered cured. I would not be alive today if it was not for foundations like TheLeukemia and Lymphoma Society who fund cutting edge research and help so many kids like myself go through their treatment. I am here today because of people who raised money for the LLS just like I am doing today. I was given a second chance at life at a very young age so I intend to make that chance count and give back and help kids and their families who are going through what me and my family went through. As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
 
Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
 
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
