I am beyond honored to be a canidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2022 Student of the Year Campaign. I have experienced the campaign as a team member for other canidates, as well as serving on the Student Leadership Team and I could not be more excited to finally get to kick off my own campaign.

We all know someone who has been affected by this awful disease, many times a child. In sixth grade, I played AAU basketball with an amazing girl named Olivia. The next year Olivia was diagnosed with T Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. She has beat cancer twice and is a survivor thanks to a bone marrow transplant from her young brother. I have watched her and countless others as their lives have been flipped upside down, enduring painful treatments, a terrifying diagnosis, and a multitude of other consequences that follow. It saddens me that her and so many countless children miss out on the simplicity of childhood they so deserve. Children should have to worry about homework, not how they will survive another day. My heart’s desire is to help ensure that daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, friends, and people of the future do not have to experience this ugly disease. 

The mission of LLS is to find a cure for blood cancers and to help patients and their families as they fight the disease. I want to do all that I can to assist the SOY campaign.

As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
 
Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
 
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
