My Cancer Story

Jan 18, 2020

As many of you know, I am a survivor of childhood leukemia.  I was diagnosed on 1/1/14 at age 11 and fought hard to win the battle.  I spent 160+ days in the hospital that year, was given total body radiation, and received a life-saving bone marrow transplant in June 2014 from a total stranger.  I was in isolation for 9 months and missed 20 months of school.  Today, I continue to battle with the lasting effects of the toxic treatment, including chronic kidney disease which will require a kidney transplant in the future

I have been nominated for Students of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  During the next 7 weeks my team and I will be seeking out as many donations as possible to help kids like me and their families.

Ashley, you beat Cancer!! You're a real champion in my book. Thanks to LLS for the life-saving research that came just in the nick of time. Thanks to Tom, your bone marrow donor, who did what he alone could do as a "match" for you. Thanks be to God for bringing everything --research, donor, medicines, medical people -- together at just the right time! Love, "Aunt" Julie PS: Thanks for the best birthday present ever -- you got to remission on my big birthday!! And your mom's, too!
