Welcome to Katelyn McChesney's SOY Fundraising Page!
This past summer I worked as an intern for the LLS Gateway Chapter. At the conclusion of my internship, I was approached about participating in the Students of the Year campaign. I knew immediately that I wanted to be a part of something so special. My time as an intern allowed me to see exactly what LLS does, and what they do is pretty special.
Toward the end of my time there, I was able to attend the kickoff party for Light The Night. I was already moved by the numerous testimonies I had seen and read on a daily basis in the office, but hearing the testimonies of cancer patients and survivors about all the ways that LLS had played a role in changing their life left me genuinely speechless.
My life has been touched by cancer more times than I can count. I have lost loved ones and I have also celebrated alongside family and friends who transitioned from patients to survivors. I have spent the last 5 years watching my grandmother fight the ugly "C" word. Each time with poise, grace, and determination. She shouldn't have to, and LLS recognizes that.
This campaign has given me the opportunity to do my part in working toward a world without cancer and without stories like mine.

I am honored to participate as a candidate for the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school and college students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As a former intern with LLS - Gateway Chapter, I am proud to be raising critical dollars in honor of a two young patient heroes who are currently battling blood cancers. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.
Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
We really are changing the face of blood cancer!
All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.
Please visit our website often and bring friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support!
