My name is Jaslyn Price, and I am a part of team Alivea’s Angels! My co-candidates (Annalyse Chamberlin and James Shin) and I are very excited to be a part of the 2020 Leukemia Lymphoma Society Students of the Year Campaign, where we will be raising money to fund cancer research as well as helping to better the lives of cancer patients along with their families; our goal is to make every cancer story end in remission. We are all participating in memory of one of our friends, Alivea Cox, who tragically passed away from Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma in June of 2018. The same day she was diagnosed with this disease she was called home to heaven. Alivea was one of my closest friends and someone who always lit up a room when she walked in. She was one of kind and not someone you encounter everyday; she was special. It was a shock to me when someone I had deep conversations with, shared grief with, laughed with, and lived with had disappeared in a blink of an eye. Alivea is someone I will never forget, she was so caring and touched every heart she was around. She was someone whom I could go to for everything and she loved me despite of my flaws. I am doing this to continue spreading her selflessness and kindness to others, and to provide awareness and support to those who need it most. Seeing how deeply our community has been affected by cancer, and knowing Alivea personally, I knew that I needed to help in some way. Thus, Alivea’s Angels was created. Almost every community has a connection to cancer in some way. I hope that someday everybody’s cancer story can end in remission.

I am honored to participate as a team member for the 2020 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am proud to support my candidate and am raising critical dollars in honor of a young patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens.

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!
