Panthers Versus Cancer Students of the Year Fundraiser
We, Mariangel Carroz, Phoebe Bagby, and Eli Hergott, have been nominated to run as co-candidates in the 2021 Students of the Year campaign in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Students of the Year is a leadership development program for high school students who compete in a 7-week fundraising campaign designed to raise awareness and funds for blood cancers. Together with our team, Panthers versus Cancer plans to raise $30,000 in 7 weeks from January 28 – March 19. We know this is an ambitious undertaking, but we are incredibly passionate about this cause as all of our lives have been affected by blood cancers.
Mariangel’s Cause: Two years ago, my aunt lost her battle to cancer after fighting for several months. It was a very bumpy road as she was constantly in and out of the hospital having surgeries that were life threatening. It tore me to pieces to watch her go through the constant pain and suffering and not being able to help. I was heartbroken to hear the news she had passed but happy to know she was at rest. This is what inspired me to bring awareness and help others going through similar situation. I hope to save the lives of other patients and continue inspiring others to bring awareness through this campaign.
Phoebe’s Cause: Last year as a junior, I watched the 2020 Lakeside Students of the Year team raise an enormous amount of money during their campaign. I was inspired by their hard work and compassion that I decided to be a campaign leader this year. Our team’s goal during the 2021 campaign is to raise more money for blood cancer research than last year’s team. In addition to the incredible amount of money being raised, I was also greatly inspired by the eye opening statistics concerning blood cancer patients. For example, approximately every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. Blood cancer has a greater impact on our world than most people realize, and I would love to make difference.
Eli’s Cause: Growing up like many people, I saw cancer as a problem but never thought it would directly affect me. Then during my freshman year of high school, my best friend’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnoses had an enormous effect on his life along with everyone around him. I witnessed firsthand how terrible cancer could be on a family. His mother’s battle with cancer was the number one concern my friend's life his entire high school experience. I believe no high school student, nor anyone for that matter, should have to go through that. Being a part of this campaign is my way of helping out my friend’s family and millions of other families affected by cancer.
We ask you to partner with us and join us in the fight against blood cancer! Please scroll up on our website to make a donation. Thank you!

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page, welcome!
I encourage you to join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign, Panthers Versus Cancer. By donating to LLS, you support the many facets of LLS’s mission work from investing in groundbreaking research, providing education and support to patients, and advocating at the state and federal level for legislation to help those living with cancer. My appreciation for your support cannot be overstated — each and every dollar donated to LLS brings us closer to our goal to end blood cancer and makes an impact for cancer patients and their families.
As a global leader in the fight to end cancer, LLS is committed to doing more for blood cancer patients and families than any organization in the world. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns drive critical support for its mission, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide since it was founded in 1949. Since the 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled.
Every facet of LLS’s mission – research, education and support, and policy and advocacy – work in harmony to put blood cancer patients and their families first. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases. That is why at LLS we say that beating cancer is in our blood.
Please visit our website as often as you can and share it with everyone you know who would also like to join us in the fight against cancer. Together, we have the power, the passion and the resolve to achieve a world without blood cancer. All donations are tax-deductible.
On behalf of cancer patients and their families everywhere, we sincerely thank you for your support!

This cause is near and dear to my heart as my father passed away last summer due to cancer. It was a very short battle, only 6 months from diagnosis at Stage 2 to progressing to Stage 4 and ultimately, his passing. Due to COVID, I couldn't go see him to say goodbye. Cancer is a horrible thing to have to have to suffer and/or witness. The world will be a batter place if we are able to find a cure. Bless you for raising
