We, Addie Vohs and Evie Eikhoff, are very excited to announce that we have been nominated to participate as candidates for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Students of the Year Campaign. The Students of the Year campaign (SOY) is a seven-week fundraising competition to raise money and awareness for LLS. We are writing today to ask for your support of our campaign and LLS’s mission to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and their families. We have been given an opportunity to help others and we cannot do it without your support.

It is especially important now to donate toward curing LLS as hospitals and healthcare workers are facing immense stress dealing with COVID-19 variants. Even in the face of a pandemic and economic volatility, our passion for the LLS mission has never been stronger. We understand this is a troubling time due to COVID-19, but the work we are doing is crucial right now – those that have blood cancer or are in remission from a blood cancer are extremely compromised and need our help to remain healthy during this difficult time. Which is why your contribution now would make a larger impact than ever before. 

The LLS mission is to cure many different types of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma. Investing $1.3 billion in research, LLS is the largest funder of research to advance cures. Their new treatments discovered through blood cancer research are now being tested in clinical trials for other cancers.

 You may know someone who has battled Leukemia, and we encourage you to make a donation in honor of them. We have decided to name our team LIONESS which is an acronym for Leukemia is on Notice, Everyone Show Support. In addition, our high school mascot is a lion. We have both served as LLS fundraising team members throughout high school, and now, as seniors, we have the final opportunity to lead a team.

Our campaign runs from January 9 to February 26 2022, and our goal is to raise $80,000 to help eradicate blood cancer. Yes, you read that correctly, $80,000 in 7 weeks, which will go directly to support LLS. We have assembled a team of students, many of whom have been impacted directly or indirectly by Leukemia or other cancers. We want to help anyway we can to make it possible for more people to beat this disease. These personal ties give us the motivation to help make a difference on their behalf. Our campaign provides an opportunity to support the critical work of LLS in fighting these diseases.

As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
 
Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS-funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
 
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
