Don't Stand by the BLOOD of your Neighbor

Jan 29, 2021

One question that I have been asked recently, by others and myself, is “Why?”

Why are you raising money? Why do you fight for these people? Why is this project important to you? and Why should this be important to me?

The straightforward answers are Because our patients need us, Because blood cancer is an uphill battle and we must support our patients and their families in every way that we can, and Because this is our job as human beings; to help our neighbors and our friends, even strangers. We refuse to stand by while there are people in our community suffering from blood cancer.

This brings to mind a specific and uniquely relevant verse from the Torah. We read in Leviticus 19:16 ; לֹ֥א תַעֲמֹ֖ד עַל־דַּ֣ם רֵעֶ֑ךָ, or Do not stand by the blood of your neighbor. The common interpretation of this passage is to understand it metaphorically: Do not stand idly by when you see someone injured or suffering in any way. Instead, you must come to their rescue and help your neighbor. As it relates to Leukemia and Lymphoma, this verse speaks to me in a very literal way. People are suffering and dying from blood cancer. We cannot stand idly by the blood of individuals who are afflicted by this disease. We must work for treatments and a cure. Team Rams has taken on an ambitious mission to show up for cancer patients and beat cancer. We are rescuing our blood cancer patients dollar by dollar in every way that we can.

Our commitment to this mitzvah does not occur in a vacuum. My teammates and I are grateful to our supportive community and school for teaching us what it means to walk in the ways of Torah, or, more literally, come to the aid of those among us suffering from cancer. Now, we want to share this mission that we have adopted with you. As we cross over into the back half of our seven week campaign, we want to take a moment and recognize why this purpose calls to us.

I am leading this campaign to honor my great uncle, Dr. Elliott Menkowitz, who was diagnosed with Diffuse B-cell Lymphoma only several weeks ago. Elliott and his wife, Sue, have three children and nine grandchildren, and live in Pottstown, Pennsylvania with their dogs, bees, and homing pigeons. He is being treated with intravenous (bloodstream) and intrathecal (spinal fluid) chemotherapy. So far, the therapy has been highly successful. Please keep Elliott Menkowitz (אליהו בן חיה) in your prayers.

We refuse to stand idly by the suffering of our neighbors. Please join our call to stand actively and not idly so that we can cure blood cancer. You can help by donating and sharing our fundraising page on social media.

באהבה Until a cure,

SAM

Week 2

Jan 12, 2021

Its alredy week 2 and our campaign is off to an outstanding start thanks to the dedication of our 19 team members and already dozens of supporters who have come together with us to stand up to blood cancer. We can't thank you guys enough.

On that note, I want to share some information with you about a new porject called The Children's Initiative. The survival rates for children with high-risk types of leukemia, such as acute myeloid leukemia, are very poor, and the outdated treatments are toxic and calibrated to better suit adults' immune systems than childrens'. Because of this, the long-term effects of current pediatric leukemia therapies can create life-threatening complications. That’s why we are increasing investment in pediatric research.

This intitiative is the first of its kind, an unprecedented $100,000,000, multi-year endeavor devoted to establishing new treatments for childhood blood cancers, a much needed development.

Please share this page with friends and family so that we can take on and accomplish this impactful work and save kids from cancer!

Until a cure,

Sam and Maggie

Kickoff!

Jan 05, 2021

Welcome, Friends and Family, to our new fundraising page.

Today, January 3rd, is the kickoff to celebrate our fundraising campaign against blood cancer. Beginning today, the Weber Rams High School legacy team will spend seven weeks engaged in raising awareness and life-changing funds for our cancer patients at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Maggie Deutsch and Sam Menkowitz are proud to lead this group of dedicated and motivated students: Bobbi Sloan, Gil Slomka, Amelia Heller, Izzy Wachter, Aviv Neuman, Jaclyn Marx, Seth Shapiro, Dov Karlin, Miriam Nadler, Lili Stadler, David Leavitt, Emily Mand, Zamir Norry, Ilana Levenberg, Leah Moradi, Rowan Noktes, Dylan Dickson, and Eva Beresin.

We are counting on you to help us make a difference by donating and sharing this page with friends. Here, we will post updates and share information about discoveries and cutting-edge cancer treatments that the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is developing including the 19 new treatments that LLS helped advance this year.

Our goal is to raise over $50,000 for cancer cures between now and February 20, 2021. We are so excited to hit the ground running and need your support now to get us launched.

BEATING CANCER IS IN OUR BLOOD!

Until a cure,

Sam and Maggie

What is SOY?

Jan 03, 2021

Students Of the Year (SOY) is a seven-week philanthropic project for students around the US. Students like us, Maggie Deutsch and Sam Menkowitz, take charge of a large-scale fundraising initiative to make a real difference. Last year, Students Of the Year raised $1.68 million to cure blood cancers and other cancer and we plan to surpass that between January 3rd and February 20, 2021.

By donating to SOY and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), you support the many facets of LLS’s mission work from investing in groundbreaking research, providing education and support to patients, and advocating at the state and federal level for legislation to help those living with cancer. Our appreciation for your support cannot be overstated — each and every dollar donated to LLS brings us closer to our goal to end blood cancer and makes an impact for cancer patients and their families.

Our patients need us now, during the pandemic, more than ever! Many are high-risk or must spend a lot of time in the hospital for treatment where they cannot go to their jobs or, in some cases, keep jobs long enough to put food on the table. While the world may have taken a pause this year, cancer has not. We need to keep up our momentum with your support and funds so that our patients can get the support that they need, even during COVID.

As a global leader in the fight to end cancer, LLS is committed to doing more for blood cancer patients and families than any organization in the world. LLS’s signature fundraising campaigns drive critical support for its mission, including a nearly $1.3 billion investment in cutting edge cancer research worldwide since it was founded in 1949. Since the 1960s, survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled.

Every facet of LLS’s mission – research, education and support, and policy and advocacy – work in harmony to put blood cancer patients and their families first. LLS has helped millions impacted by cancer throughout its more than 70-year history, even funding breakthrough blood cancer research to advance lifesaving treatments and cures that is now helping patients with other cancers and diseases. That is why at LLS we say that beating cancer is in our blood.

Please visit this site often to recieve updates and learn about cutting-edge treatments and cures funded by lls and share our website with everyone you know who would also like to join us in the fight against cancer. Together, we have the power, the passion and the resolve to achieve a world without blood cancer. All donations are tax-deductible.

On behalf of cancer patients and their families everywhere, we, Maggie Deutsch and Sam Menkowitz, sincerely thank you for your support!
