We are honored to be selected as candidates for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2019 Students of the Year Fundraising Campaign.  The Students of the Year (SOY) is a seven-week fundraising initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.   Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year.  We are asking for your support of our campaign and LLS’s mission to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease or myeloma. We have been given an opportunity to help others and we cannot do it without your support.

As many of you know, our connection to Leukemia started before we were born.  In 1987, Debbie Vohs, Derrick Vohs’ sister, lost her battle with Leukemia.  She was 19. In 1995, Caroline Doherty’s sister, Julie Brantley Grundhoefer, died of Leukemia.  She was 29. We never knew our Aunts. Because of this, we have named our team MAD LION.  MAD LION is an acronym for My Aunt Died, Leukemia Is On Notice. Our high school, Lovett, has a Lion as its mascot.

Our campaign is from January 31, 2019, to March 23, 2019, our goal is to raise $150,000 to help eradicate blood cancer.  Yes, you read that correctly, $150,000 in 7 weeks, which will go directly to support LLS. We have assembled a team of 23 students, many of whom have been impacted directly or indirectly by Leukemia or other cancers.

We want to help anyway we can to make it possible for more people to beat this disease. These personal ties give us the motivation to help make a difference on their behalf. Our campaign provides an opportunity to support the critical work of LLS in fighting these diseases.
