And here we go! We're ready to kick things off and make a difference.

Anaanya is a 16-year-old sophomore at Penncrest High School. She is an active participant in indoor colorguard, the school choir and band, and Physics Olympics. She has been playing piano for the past 8 years, and doing classical Indian dance for the last 9. She is a student teacher at her temple Sunday school, and has been doing volunteer work with organizations such as Charity Crossings and Seva International. She was introduced to the LLS campaign by doctors at University of Pennsylvania, and by teachers at her school. 

Amulya is a 14-year-old freshman at Penncrest High School. She is a part of the Penncrest Science Olympiad team, the band, and the Jazz Lab. She has been learning Kuchipudi for the past 7 years, playing piano for the past 8, and playing oboe for the past 3. She is an active volunteer at her temple, and has volunteered for organizations such as Water Access Now and the Ronald McDonald House. She was introduced to the Students of the Year program by her mother, a hematologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

The Soaring Cranes Initiative 2019

We are honored to participate in the 2019 Students of the Year program, a seven-week initiative in which select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We will be raising critical dollars in honor of Delaney Farren, our LLS hero and inspiration for this campaign. Each dollar is a vote. The candidate team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Student(s) of the Year. Our mission is to not only raise the most money but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia, which is the most common form of cancer in children and teens. Over the years, we have met many people suffering from blood cancers in our community. The sad truth is, blood cancer does not discriminate. It affects old and young alike. Their lives have been changed with the help of this organization, and you too, can become of this impact.

The name for our campaign comes from a story we both read when we were younger. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes describes the story of a courageous young girl suffering from leukemia after the bombing of Hiroshima. The story describes a Japanese legend about origami paper cranes. If Sadako completed 1000 cranes, her wish for a cure would be granted. Unfortunately, she passed away before reaching her goal. The paper crane is the symbol of hope for our campaign, The Soaring Cranes Initiative.

All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS-funded research but will help provide critical information and support for patients, and support advocacy for laws to ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.

Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
